A Courageous Stand Against Her Own Child Marriage

My name is Ragini Kumari Ram, a 14-year-old girl from Haripurwa Municipality, Ward No. 8 in Sarlahi District. I am currently in grade 9 at Shree Ram Janaki Secondary School. Growing up in a family of five, we struggled financially, as my parents worked as daily wage laborers. My life changed when Bagmati Welfare Society Nepal, launched the Child Protection and Sponsorship Plan project in my community. I was enrolled and received essential materials like notebooks and school supplies, which motivated me to attend school regularly. I also joined the Nava Jiwan Child Club, where I learned about safety, hygiene during menstruation, and the dangers of child marriage.

When I learned that a friend was being forced into an early marriage, I convinced her parents to reconsider. Soon after, I discovered my own parents were planning the same for me. Shocked, I talked to my father, explaining the harmful effects of child marriage and the legal implications under Nepalese law. After our discussion, he agreed not to proceed with my early marriage. Now, I advocate against child marriage in my home and community. I am determined to marry only after completing my education and becoming independent. I am grateful for empowering me to make a difference in my life and the lives of others.
