LIVELIHOODS / NUTRITION
Our Livelihood/Nutrition thematic area focuses on enhancing economic resilience, reducing poverty, and improving the quality of life for marginalized and vulnerable communities. Through diverse interventions ranging from infrastructure development to capacity building, this thematic area addresses multidimensional challenges, including food insecurity, lack of income opportunities, and systemic discrimination. Projects under this theme adopt sustainable and inclusive models, empowering communities to achieve long-term self-reliance and improved livelihoods.
Key Highlights:
● Empowering Vulnerable Communities: Projects like the Agriculture and Economic Development Project, Churiya Livelihood Improvement Program, and Scaling-Up Extreme Poverty Graduation and Climate Change Resilience have directly benefit marginalized groups such as Dalits, Muslims, and women, providing them with skills, assets, and opportunities to escape poverty cycles.
● Infrastructure Development: Projects like the Rural Agricultural Road Construction and Rural Access Improvement and Decentralization Project; and the related activities like fish pond construction, irrigation supply construction, and market hub construction connect rural areas to market centers, facilitating economic opportunities and improving access to social services.
● Women’s Economic Empowerment: Our projects like the Community Women Development Project and Bagmati Community Poverty Alleviation Program focus on training and supporting women in animal farm management, kitchen gardening, and micro-enterprise development, promoting gender equity in economic participation.
● Post-Disaster Economic Recovery: BWSN continuously monitors the loss of livelihood options due to disaster and crisis in its project areas, particularly in Madhesh province; and takes quick steps for recovery. Projects such as the Socio-Economic Recovery for COVID-19 Affected Families (SERC) and Resilience Cash Assistance Program (ReCAP) are the examples and which have provided immediate financial relief and sustainable livelihood options for families affected by disasters and pandemics.
● Rights-Based Approaches: BWSN focuses on right based approach and helps advocate for the rights of disadvantaged people by creating a model for service delivery. Our programs like the Strengthening Oppressed Communities and Promoting Justice Program and Raising the Status of Person with Disability through Empowerment and Rehabilitation addresses the systemic inequities, empowering historically excluded groups to claim their rights and improve their socio-economic conditions.
