DISASTER RISK REDUCTION, NRM, AND CLIMATE CHANGE
Our ‘The Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), Natural Resource Management (NRM), and Climate Change thematic area focuses on building community resilience against natural disasters and climate vulnerabilities. By promoting sustainable resource management, disaster preparedness, and climate adaptation strategies, works under this thematic area empower communities to mitigate risks, recover effectively, and foster environmental sustainability.
Key Highlights::
● Disaster Preparedness and Early Warning Systems: Our projects like the Community-Based Early Warning Dissemination System (CbEWS) and Nepal Disaster Risk Reduction (NDRR) project strengthen community awareness, preparedness, and response capabilities through training, simulation exercises, and the establishment of early warning systems.
● Post-Disaster Recovery and Resilience: Our initiatives such as the Flash Flood Emergency Response (FFER) Project and Post-Flood Recovery Project are examples to provide essential relief, infrastructure repair, and capacity-building to flood-affected communities, improving resilience and recovery.
● Sustainable Resource Management: Our works in sustainable resource management is exemplified by the projects like the Partnership Forest Management Project and Resilient Inclusive WASH (RES-WASH). These type of projects focus on biodiversity conservation, water management, and climate-resilient WASH systems, ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources.
● Community Engagement for Climate Adaptation: We believe in community engagement for sustainability of the initiatives and ownership. One typical example includes ‘The Building Resilient Communities in Province 2 of Nepal’ Project which promotes climate-adaptive agricultural practices, disaster risk reduction (DRR) planning, and advocacy for climate- responsive policies to strengthen community resilience.
● Integrated Disaster Management: Initiatives like the Humanitarian Preparedness Program to Natural Disaster (HPP-ND) and WASH Emergency Disaster Preparedness Program have integrated disaster management to improve disaster risk management capacity through capacity-building, sanitation infrastructure, and livelihood support.
Environment and Energy
Our ‘The Environment and Energy thematic area’ focuses on promoting sustainable environmental practices and renewable energy solutions to enhance the resilience and livelihoods of vulnerable communities. Through natural resource conservation, biodiversity preservation, and clean energy interventions, works under this thematic area address climate change challenges while promoting socio- economic development.
Key Highlights:
● Sustainable Forest and Biodiversity Management: Our initiative for forest and biodiversity management is represented by one of our project – ‘The Partnership Forest Management Project,’ which helps promote community engagement in sustainable forest management, soil conservation, and biodiversity protection through plantation drives and stakeholder coordination.
● Energy Access for Vulnerable Communities: We have notable contributions to improve energy access. Projects like the Rural Poverty Alleviation Program (RuPAP) and Rural Infrastructure Development Program integrate renewable energy solutions such as rural electrification and renewable energy-based infrastructure to uplift socio-economic conditions in underserved areas.
● Smoke-Free Kitchens for Women’s Health: The Stove Distribution Project provided eco-friendly stoves to households relying on firewood for cooking, significantly reducing indoor air pollution and health risks for marginalized women, including those affected by uterine prolapse.
● Disaster-Resilient Energy Infrastructure: The WASH Innovation 3R Demonstration in Sarlahi Project integrated innovative energy solutions such as high-voltage electricity lines for pumping safe drinking water in flood-prone areas, improving both water access and energy resilience.
● Livelihood Improvement through Renewable Energy: Our projects like the Bagmati Community Poverty Alleviation Program and the Rural Agricultural Market Road Reconstruction Project have enhanced market access and livelihoods through improved energy-supported infrastructure, benefiting rural farmers and traders.
